How Do You Clean Dentures? A Complete Guide for Proper Care

If you wear dentures, one of the most important things to know is how you clean them properly. Keeping them clean is essential not only for maintaining a bright, healthy smile but also for preventing oral health issues such as gum disease, bad breath, and denture damage.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through the best methods for cleaning, offer tips to keep them in top condition, and explain why proper denture care is crucial for your overall oral health.

Why Is Cleaning Your Dentures Important?

Dentures, whether full or partial, require daily care to remove food particles, plaque, and bacteria that can accumulate throughout the day. Proper cleaning prevents staining and helps extend the life of them. Failing to clean them can lead to oral infections, gum irritation, and even damage, potentially requiring costly repairs or replacements.

How to Clean

Cleaning may seem straightforward, but doing it the right way ensures they remain in good condition and function properly. Follow these steps for effective daily cleaning:

1. Rinse After Eating

After every meal, remove them and give them a thorough rinse under warm water. This helps to wash away any food debris or particles trapped in or around them. Be sure to handle them carefully to avoid dropping or damaging them.

2. Brush Daily

Use a soft-bristled denture brush or a regular soft toothbrush to clean your dentures every day. They can become stained just like natural teeth, so brushing them helps remove plaque, bacteria, and stains. It’s important to use a non-abrasive cleanser or mild soap—avoid regular toothpaste, which can be too harsh and scratch the surface.

3. Soak Overnight

Most dentures need to stay moist to maintain their shape. Soaking them in a dentist-recommended solution overnight helps keep them clean and bacteria-free. This soaking process also helps loosen any remaining particles, making brushing easier the next day. Make sure to follow the instructions on your soaking solution, as some products are not suitable for certain materials.

4. Rinse Before Wearing

After soaking, always rinse them thoroughly under water before placing them back in your mouth. This ensures that any cleaning solution residue is removed, which can cause irritation if left on your teeth.

5. Care for Your Gums

Even though they replace natural teeth, it’s essential to care for your gums and mouth. Gently brush your gums, tongue, and palate with a soft-bristled brush to remove any bacteria and keep your oral tissue healthy. This also stimulates blood flow to the gums, helping them stay strong and healthy to support your dentures.

Tips for Long-Term Denture Care

  1. Avoid Hot Water: When cleaning or rinsing, always use lukewarm water. Hot water can cause your dentures to warp, leading to poor fit and discomfort.
  2. Handle with Care: Artificial teeth can be delicate. When cleaning them, hold them over a soft towel or a basin of water to prevent damage if you drop them.
  3. Regular Check-Ups: Even with proper care, you may need adjustments over time. Regular visits to your dentist ensure that they remain a perfect fit and that your oral health is monitored.
  4. Replace When Needed: They have a lifespan of about 5-7 years. If they become worn or uncomfortable, speak with your dentist about getting a new set to maintain your oral health and comfort.

After having some hiccups in my treatment which were quite anxiety inducing and annoying. I've been treated by April and Shankar for the past few months. They set things right and restored my faith in the clinic. The 5 stars are for them.

This is my second review in addition to my original review I left below earlier. Today 08/08/2023 remarks the end of my braces journey with Waldron Dental clinic. I cannot recommend this place any more! I had big gaps between my tooth with weird structured front tooth. Waldron Dental Clinic team was able to close all gaps and give me the natural Hollywood smile. It is money that is well spent and if time goes back I will still chose Waldron Dental Clinic over any other clinic. The team there is very skilled, patient and you feel directly that they know what they are doing. They are always willing to answer all questions and explain what they are doing and why! Also, a point that is very worth mentioning, for the retainers, they have an advanced technological equipment that takes a 3D copy of your tooth when you take your braces off. It is 10x more accurate than the traditional moulding technique that all Dental Clinics use! The retainers I received were fitting is perfectly from the first time!! Well done Waldron Clinic Team! All the Best ———————————————————————— Mr. Grant from Waldron Dental Clinic has just served me via a phone call - 13.08.2022. I don’t really usually leave reviews but he absolutely deserves. I need to say that I absolutely had one of the best customer experiences in terms of help for personal reasons. Mr. Grant did not even hesitate to help and he just straightaway understood that we all as human beings we face sudden personal issues that wouldn’t help us to attend an appointment Speaking about him, his voice was very clear and the phone quality was superb. I did not fail to miss a single word, not as what we experience nowadays on customer service phone calls from other companies. His voice tune was very calming as well and he tried to make the phone call cheerful and he didn’t fail to put a smile on my face this morning! Thank you Mr. Grant, I hope Waldron Dental Clinic relevant people will view this review Many Thanks, Faris ElBalawi
